Multiple television makers are implementing support for AirPlay 2 and iTunes on their latest television sets. The string of announcements for support all come via the Consumer Electronics Show in Los Angeles.
LG, Samsung, Sony, and Vizio all announced that their upcoming 2019 televisions will support full streaming of video, music, and display mirroring from your iOS and macOS devices via the AirPlay 2 protocol. Though this may seem to cannibalize the desire for the Apple TV microconsole for owners of these television sets, Apple has determined that the overlap between those TV owners and those interested in purchasing an Apple TV is not worth the potential of introducing additional functionality to those that will own the TV and an iPhone, iPad, or Mac computer.
For Samsung TV sets starting in spring of 2019, there will also be support for streaming movies and television shows purchased through iTunes directly via the TV. This support will be extended to some 2018 sets via a future firmware update.
